The Lyrics

I spent four years in Vietnam
And proud I was to do my term
I missed my girlfriend and my mom
Fought for my country, I'm no worm
No tougher time in all my life
It notched my soul just like a knife..

We'd smell that napalm in the morning, napalm
Could not escape it in those jungles, baby
No love for napalm in the morning, napalm
Robert Duvall - loves it, not me

Seldom saw sunlight through the green
Could trust no women, kids, or cows
Slept hours few and far between
Snipers hid in the jungle boughs
Night vision goggles pierced the night
And overhead roared choppers flight

We'd smell that napalm in the morning, napalm
You can't escape it in those jungles, baby
Hated that napalm in the morning, napalm
Robert Duvall - take mine, it's free..

Came back whole, on that day
Some of my buddies stayed behind
Home peace was slow, nightmares would stay
Control my body, and my mind
Honored the dead - they built a wall
I'd go again, and hate it all..

We'd smell that napalm in the morning, napalm
Could not escape it in those jungles, baby
No love for napalm in the morning, napalm
Robert Duvall - can have it all

Astute choice of OS again for a heavy topic, and good subbing as usual. Is it based on your own experience? I thought it was Martin Sheen with the 'napalm in the morning' line? It's a long time since I saw it.

Thanks, LL...from the movie, "Apocalypse Now" starring Brando, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall, who plays a rather war-crazy Colonel in charge of a helicopter squadron...Duvall is the one who utters the famous line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"

And, Oh, my experience?...no, just fiction.

One of the nastiest weapons of a nasty war. Good link of OS to unforgettable movie line.

Nice war weapon parody-555! Napalm A was first used against the Germans in France in '44. The Germans for their part probably had the best flamethrowers of WW2 that used a similar combo to gel petrol but also were developing the first FAEs. Why they never used them in combat is another mystery like the non-use of their stocks of Tabun nerve gas. Latter 1945 German tanks also would have fired fusing magnesium rounds!!! FYI

Were FAE's in development, Robert, or did the Third Reich actually have stocks of them. Oftentimes, there was many a slip between R&D of a weapon and deployment for use by the Nazi military .. thank God. As for non-use of poison gas, I think Hitler may have been spooked by the prospects of retaliation as he himself was brutalized by a gas attack in WWI

CML, the LW had a range of advanced weapons that were never used in combat or were in test phase. The FAEs were manufactured but not filled. A firedamp weapon was also tested but not used. The first revolver cannons were installed in Fw-190s as were the first X-4 AAMs on the wings but in the chaos of 1945 no one knows if they went beyond testing. Loads of rocket weapons too. Hitler actually DID order Tabun shells brought up to Berlin on a barge but it sat idle and was captured by Soviet forces on approach. Since Hitler had been gassed in WW1, he probably did not want to use it. Neither the mysterious N-Material produced nor the bunker-buster Rochling AC shells were used either, just stockpiled. 5 D-2 radiological missiles were built at Leese and then destroyed. Germany was like one big treasure chest of wonders in 1945 with Western and Soviet Intel teams searching for lists of weapons and scientists. All too often they found more than they bargained for!

Well written and I never could figure out why the Duvall character loved the smell.
