The Lyrics

A song about the sense of confusion felt by members of the public and most employers during the lockdown period arising from the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Composed in the context of the United Kingdom, these lines must resonate throughout other communities around the globe. The Cabinet comprises the group of highly influential representatives (largely elected) appointed by a Prime Minister; it's membership may be altered from time-to-time at his or her discretion.
Now I’ve heard there was a secret pact
To stop Matt Hancock getting sacked,
But you don’t really care for rumours, do you?
It goes like this, move right, then left,
Of clarity we’re now bereft -
The baffled Cabinet will now confuse yer

We’ll confuse yer, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, we’ll confuse yer

Your soap was strong, we washed our pores,
We helped the children stay indoors,
The larger firms and pressure groups did woo yer.
You sent some e-mails from your chair
Though barbers couldn’t style your hair
And papers owned by distant men confused yer

They’ll confuse yer, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, we’ll confuse yer

You say I should avoid the train
And face up to the boss again
But then I might be asking, “What’s it to yer?”
Ambiguity in all your words,
It doesn’t matter which you heard,
The landlords and the drunkards might abuse yer

They’ll confuse yer, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, we’ll confuse yer

I did my best, it wasn’t much,
My government seems out of touch,
Protect our health, we didn’t vote for culling.
And even though we’ve waited long
It seems as though you’re going wrong,
New graphs and so-called road maps you are mulling

They’ll confuse yer, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, we’ll confuse yer

We’ll confuse yer, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, we’ll confuse yer,
Hallelujah.
Matthew Hancock is the Conservative Member of the UK House of Commons for West Suffolk, having been elected by that constituency in 2010. He joined the Cabinet in 2018 as Culture Secretary and subsequently became Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in July 2018. A year later, upon Boris Johnson's appointment as the UK's prime minister, Matt Hancock retained that position in the Cabinet. Given that role, he was closely associated with both the timing and details of the government's response to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic as 2020 unfolded. The government was widely criticized by medical staff, academics, journalists, the hospitality and transport industries for a hesitant reaction, contradictory messages and relatively little sympathy for the residents and staff within the largely-privatised care home sector. There were strong suggestions that a pro-Brexit agenda caused the Cabinet to miss several opportunities to acquire sufficient protective equipment for health service personnel, carers (employed or otherwise), employees in the food supply chain and the drivers of buses, trains or delivery trucks.
