But now its come to distances and both of us must try, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way, to say, goodbye Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free. Submitted by: LucidLupin

Story about this misheard lyric by: Timi Zhuo It didn't really get that far due to the obvious mistake. (Given the character of the song it was somewhat unlikely that he would be singing THAT!) I checked up on the Internet shortly afterwards. However, the mental image of Jeff Buckley sharing a threesome with a duck (holy or not) will still be recalled every time I hear the song. It does sort of ruin my enjoyment of this beautiful song. |

The Nonsensical Lyrics: And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water. Why They're Nonsensical: Oh so that made him a sailor? If he ever glided along the ground in a sailboat, I guess that would make him a pedestrian at THAT time. :)

The Misrhymed Lyrics: But you don't really care for music, do ya?
The baffled king composing hallelujah. Why They're Misrhymed: In every single verse, Cohen rhymes something else with 'hallelujah' - as well as 'do ya?' he manages 'overthrew ya,' 'what's it to ya?' and 'fool ya.' When he sings it, it almost sounds like it rhymes, too!

The Insulting Lyrics: I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord. But you don't really care for music, do ya? Why They're Insulting: Since these are the opening lines to the song, there is no antecedent to the pronoun "you". While later verses seem to maybe make the song addressed to a love interest with whom the singer has co-habitated, the lack of an antecedent in these opening lines means that "you" seems to be addressed to any random listener. It is rude and/or presumptuous to confront any possible random listener with the leading question "But you don't really care for music, do ya?". If anything, the fact that one is listening to the song suggests that that one DOES care for music.

The Dirty Lyrics: Giving me head on the unmade bed,
While the limousines wait in the street. Why They're Dirty: Most of Leonard Cohen's songs are pretty filthy if you listen, this is just one of the more obvious and well known lines. It shouldn't need explaining as to why it is 'dirty'.
