Rishi Sunak is now Prime Minister of the UK: back in April (seems like aeons ago), it was leaked (any odds by a Boris who was feeling threatened by the popularity of his Chancellor) that Rishi's wife Akshata Murty, a billionaire scion of the Infosys family, had non-dom status and was paying a nominal 30k pa on multi-million income.

When this story broke, Sunak went in to bat for his wife, saying what she was doing was legal. It was, and is, completely legal - nobody was suggesting lawbreaking or anything other than it highlighting a manifest and gross unfairness in our tax system that lets incredibly rich people pay to all intents and purposes nothing. Murty let it be known that she was voluntarily going to pay tax on worldwide income to try and avert the storm which threatened her husband's political career (https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/rishi-sunaks-wife-akshata-murty-gives-up-non-dom-tax-status-and-promises-to-pay-uk-tax-on-worldwide-income-1566258). Very successfully, it now turns out: for a few million in tax, her husband now has the most powerful job in the UK. In more normal times, this story probably would have been a career killer, but after Johnson and then Truss, the Tories were desperate for someone who had even the tiniest vestiges of credibility.

But.. Sunak had the power to make rich people pay appropriate amounts of tax as Chancellor, yet spurned that opportunity. He didn't want his wife to pay a fair amount (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61034496), and I find it disheartening that it seems the opportunity to run the country can be bought so cheaply. Murty sounded very gracious in saying "It has become clear that many do not feel it is compatible with my husband’s role as Chancellor. I understand and appreciate the British sense of fairness and I do not wish my tax status to be a distraction for my husband or to affect my family.", but that sounds very much like "I can pay what I want, and if my husband wasn't politically ambitious, I'd carry on paying a pittance"

We shouldn't be happy that she decided to make that decision, we should be appalled that it was necessary. A billionaire shouldn't need a spouse to be vying for the country's top job to pay tax, it should be a part of the country's tax rules.

He got lucky: being the least utterly pisspoor option of the bottom of the barrel scrapings. It would be so nice if he were to look at his wife's decision to pay tax on her earnings in the UK and say "if she can do it, so can everyone else (even you, Lord Rothermere of the Daily Mail)". But the evidence suggests that he won't. Sigh.
