The Lyrics

Folks were hung where I come from
When they'd start stealin' cattle
They'd wind up dead as could be
Swingin' from a hangin' tree
(Swingin' from a hangin' tree)

Noosed 'em high upon a horse,
Then made that horse skee-daddle
Not a pretty sight to see
Swingin' from a hangin' tree
(Swingin' from a hangin' tree)

The unwritten law in the olden days
Was to teach all bad people, better mend their ways
When they'd see outlaws hang, it was plain as hell..
Just an old western way, of early "Show and Tell"
Swing-in' from a tree (from a hangin' tree)

From Californ- to Texas..grew neck-tie party fame
They'd mark their graves with x-es,
On a Boothill sodded claim..

Judge Roy Beam, he ruled, supreme
Stood for no fiddle-faddle..
When he found a man guilt-ee
Swung him from a hangin' tree (swung him from a hangin' tree)

Before the trial, the jury'd file
Into the bar for drinkin'
Held court when they got tip-see
(Then) hung 'em from a hangin' tree (hung em'
from a hangin' tree)
When each booze cup was emptied up,
They'd reach a verdict clinkin'
Unanimous, they'd vote gult-ee
Take him out to the hangin' spree. (hang him
From a hangin' tree)
Today, folks might call that mean and cruel
But in those early times, a real good justice tool
Although, some would still be committin' crimes
Old Judge Beam made a big dent in their life and times
With his hangin' tree, (Good old hangin' tree)
His court was like no other,
Had bottles in his book
Decisions were no bother,
Everybody was a crook..
If defendants made raves and rants,
They, forcibly, were carried
Briefly'd swear, then dangle there
Finished on a hangin' tree (diminished on a hangin' tree)

Did Judge Roy have a brother named Jim by chance? The two went so well together. He was known as the hanginest judge west of the Pecos. And oh yeah, Boot Hill - I have been to the real one about a half dozen times in Tombstone Az. One grave marker there is a hoot:

Here lies Lester Moore
Four shots from a forty-four
No less
No more

I'd hang around Farce but their are others to read. Fine write as usual. Love your stuff buddy. Oh if you haven't done so yet, get out your "Fuedin, fightin' and a fussin'" parody and see what I left ya.

Another great parody, AFW! For the history-minded, though, we *should* give credit where credit is due. The "Hanging Judge" was actually Isaac C. Parker of Fort Smith, AR (a former town of residence for FG, as it happens). Somewhere down the line, probably as a result of Hollywood influence, he and Roy Bean were linked together in the public's mind. Despite film portrayals, though, Judge Bean was merely a justice of the peace, and wouldn't have had the authority to hand down death sentences.

If you're at all curious, you can read about Judge Parker here: http://www.nps.gov/fosm/historyculture/biography.htm

@TT's comment - LOL!

@ FG's comment - Ths boy knows better than to argue with "the teach". I was totally wrong about more than a few things here. I could have sworn it was Judge Roy Beam . and not Bean. That was the ref to Jim as in Jim Beamâ„¢. Roy Bean a JP? I can see that his image was just another tall Texas tale. But the part about Boot Hill in Tombstone, Az. is absolutely 100% correct. I saw it with my own eyes and I even bought the tee shirt. This too could have been folk lore and put up as a gag but nonetheless a wooden board about 5 feet tall that is rounded at the top bears the epitaph of Lester Moore. The town newspaper "The Tobmstone Epitaph" still stands but I am not sure if they still publish.

Farcey, go get your gun! At first, I thought it was going to be about Tarzan but I still enjoyed this one! Swing on some 5's.

(well, it *sounded* like a railroad) ... IIRC, Eastwood's "Hang 'Em High" was indeed based on a real judge, and I do seem to remember quite distinctly that the real judge was in Ft. Smith, AK, as FG says (how did you escape being hanged, Fid?) ,,, btw, the correct past tense, surprisingly enough, for the verb meaning "to suspend someone by the neck until dead" is "hanged", for exactly TT's punny reason: It avoids confusion with all other meanings of "hang" - "I hung the laundry out to dry." .... TMI, I know .....

Thanks, Guy...and funny epitaph...yes, I checked "Feudin" ..you always leave interesting, and great comments...and thanks LCC...I know you're cowgirl, too.. and thanks to TT..yes, I figured a horny turtle might catch that...and thanks to you, Andy...yes, good old Clint and those Spag. westerns...and my thanks to Fg...for putting me back on the "Bean"...I guess, like Guy, I went the whiskey route...It was Judge Roy BeaN...I had one too many humps in there...shows I don't know Beans about western history...you seem to have it down to a science, tho'...interesting antecdotes, there...and I'll check that website out...and thanks, again, Guy...for more interesting add-ons...and also to TT..for clever explains...oops, almost overlooked you, Christie..thanks mucho...Tarzan, eh? Hmm, is he the Star Wannabee, who used to hang around the corner of Hollywood and VINE?

This guy was really hung! Also, wasn't Judge Jeffries (James the 2nd's trials after Monmouth's rebellion) the original Hanging Judge? Anyway...great job again won! Hang in there! ;D

Thanks, OMR...ya' got me...I didn't do much research...just sorta' shot this parody from the hip...and thanks, LCC...In Calif. isn't that a "Row-DAY-oh"....like Row-DAY-oh drive?
Guy @ Farce - June 27, 2010 - Report this comment
Only, like those described in the OS of that Feudin' song parody you did a while back might say "Look here city slicker"... Only city slickers and folks who visit dude ranches would use Row-Day-Oh. 'Round these parts it is called Row-Dee-Oh and ours runs during the month of February. I'm sure our lady of the wee bovines calls it Row-Dee-Oh. She's a cowgirl don't ya know. Her main squeeze is someone she refers to as Cowboy Bob.

Anyone who likes cowboys is OK in my book. It's just when one cowboy likes another cowboy a bit too much is what really "breaks my back". To each his own but with cowboys that movie just wrecks the image - call me old school. I grew up on a recipe of TV westerns and I still enjoy them when they occassionally hit the box office with a new one.
