The Lyrics

During my interlude without internet, I've passed one of life's millstones.. I mean milestones
And now, my end is near
My fading youth has truly faded
Farewell, good health and cheer
My outlook now is old and jaded
My rounded, flabbly form
That once was fit and lithe and sporty
And why, oh why, is this?
It's 'cause I'm forty

And so, an aging guy
I wave bye-bye to my libido
At night, too tired to try
No "real thing", just a placebo
No lewd, lascivious thoughts
Not even dreams of being naughty
For now I just "exist"
Now that I'm forty

And on my head, I once had hair
Look in the mirror - what's left there?
Some at the back, some at the side
My parting: now six inches wide
And I'm appalled
To think: me? bald?
Just 'cause I'm forty

Your birthday slipped my mind
And now I find that didn't please ya
I don't mean to be unkind
But at my age, I get amnesia
My brain's melting away
I guess senility has caught me
I'm old - I can't resist
Because I'm forty

What's that you say? Life's just begun?
I've years and years left to have fun
And so you say - and you should know
'Cause you were forty... *years* ago
And if YOU do
Hell, I can, too
Now that I'm fooooorteeeee

Nah, you're behind the times, my friend. Fifty is the new slacking-off age. 555 and Happy Birthday!

I'm glad I stopped growing older when I hit 39. Excellent from start to finish.

One man's millstone is another man's fond memory. Happy birthday, Phil.

masterfully written Phil, but gee I'd love to be having turning 40 (only) as a problem on my horizon (loved the 6-inch-wide parting gag) - 555

:-) Thanks everybody, especially for making me feel like a youngster, still... And still without internet at home, I only get to reply from inside a prison - kind of odd (and also the reason why I'm being fairly brief and not checking out everyone else's stuff. Feeling a bit guilty about that. Sigh.)
I've performed this one a couple of times now, and it's gone down fairly well.
Stu - I liked the gag so much I nicked it from Billy Connolly (and his original's phrased better, too: "The hair that once flowed round my shoulders/Is drifting off just like the tide/That thing that was my middle parting/Is now about four inches wide"). Anyway, must get some work done.
