The Lyrics

Near the last of August
in the year two thousand five
The hurricane Katrina and
some mighty waves arrive
And when the storm is over
devastating are the scenes
But, even more horrific is
The Shame Of New Orleans

Oh, they fire off guns,
It's an anarchy beginnin'
They're looting food and water
That was promised days ago
Many others dyin'
From the waste and all the needin'
Of the New Orleans survivors
On the Gulf of Mexico..

Some convene at the center
where they hear a bus will come
Hot and weary, thousands of 'em
thirsty, hungry, numb
Both young and old,
many moms with babes in arm
Are wadin' through the waters
to escape the way of harm

Evacuation
is an order handed down
But, with no communication
how ya' gonna' tell the town?
Coast Guard heroes
rescue many
do their job
Arsonists and rapists, too
are mixed among the mob

Oh, they fire off guns
with an anarchy beginnin'
There is no peace and order
Law enforcement at a low
In the Superdome
facin' Hell without a Satan
The New Orleans survivors
At the Gulf of Mexico..

Water rose above the rooftops
when the levees didn't hold
Could be bodies in the attics
after stories can be told
Those who have been rescued
face a challenge, bigger still
When bussed to other cities
no belongings, 'cept their will

Then big news conf 'rences
where politicians drool
Make Mayor Ray Nagin
blow his top and lose his cool
Tho' the storm struck Monday
reapin' havoc and a mess
No real aid comes till Friday
from a desperate "SOS"

Oh, they still hear guns
many buildings yet a'burnin'
The Guard has brought some order
not containment, by no means
The pain goes on
and an awful lot of suff 'rin
People of the world all
feel The Shame Of New Orleans..

Who's to take the blame
for..The.. Shame... Of... New Orleans?

brilliant, AFW - what a gift to be able to channel your obviously intense emotions into something creative like this - 555

Thank you, Stuart.....Like the rest of the world, I'm sure...I;ve been glued to my TV set for this powerful true reality show, on cable channels, since last weekend....A mix of tragedies, so overwhelming and soul stirring...

Excellent AFW. I didn't keep up with Katrina that much but I believe they got evac notice before they lost power/communications. As for the last line, a category 5 hurricane is the main blame. It didn't help that New Orleans is below sea level either. I'll let someone else bash Bush, that is too easy to do....

well done and well said 5's

Thanks, RedAnt.....evacuation order I referred to, was the one given by Governor Blanco a day or two after Katrina hit...When she said everyone must be leave the flooded city....I didn't get into bashing or finger pointing either...and today, all systems are working like clockwork... I refer to the long delay in getting food and water to the survivors in N.O....four days for most....I don't believe we can blame a Cat. five for that...even Bush admitted the aid response time was bad..........................And thanks, Carol...

Ah sorry AFW, I misread "order". I do know they were "advised" to leave before Katrina and that many couldn't due to lack of transportation. I have little idea of the logistical problems of dealing with a natural disaster of this scale but I would hope that a better way of responding to such catastrophes is implemented now...too bad they almost always come after such an event.

I saw on TV Bush meeting with Governor Bob Riley of Alabama and Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi. Both Republicans. Governor Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana is a Democrat. Has Georgie the Vacation Boy met with her yet? Or with Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans?

not very good really doesnt fit the music just seems like an attempt to force in commentary instead of any real parody.

Thank you! Someone with a heart! I know that I dont do much writing anymore. And Im sure that all the people that once knew my name are long gone as well. I have been disgusted lately with the up and coming morons here at Amiright. But seeing this parody has restored my faith in the latest generation of spoofers. Thank you AFW, and may God bless you.

Bush may have forgotten about New Orleans for two or three critical days, Ghetto John, but we will never forget you. We'll always have a kettle of gold out for you.

I'e kind of avoided reading N.O.-related parodies until today. I havne't read many, but this one was very potent...and didn't resort to boring Bush bashing.
