The Lyrics

A popular labor union protest song by James Oppenheim, circa 1911. The best recording I have heard is by Judy Collins on her "So Early in the Spring" album. Listen to John Denver's version some time, if you dare. I liked the bagpipes, but he got a key word in the song totally wrong and changed the meaning. I've been waiting for Hillary to concede before submitting my rendition but I think the line up for this fall's election is set. Not really trying to be funny. Bread and Roses may be a bit obscure, especially to younger people, but there are several good versions on youtube.
As we go marching, marching into the voting booth
There's no one there to choose from and that is the awful truth
No more a Ronald Reagan, Harry Truman, or Abe Lincoln
Our Country is in peril and the Ship of State is sinking

First Tuesday in November, we have a choice to make
The evil of two lessers or historical mistake
"Young, exciting, shallow", "Old and hates the Constitution"
Either lever pulled will bring us chains and destitution

As we look to the future, uncounted soldiers dead
Economy in ruins and a general sense of dread
Future generations, decimated by abortion
Shall never know the glory of which we have had a portion

Don't let our Nation's story decay on History's shelves
Stop looking for a savior and start looking to ourselves
For we are better people than the ones who seek to lead us
Who lie to gain the power to restrain and tax and bleed us

May the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt help us; he was our last Great Cowboy President: "Speak softly & carry a Big Stick!"

A passionate take on the original song. Well written and seems quite fitting. The country has had some tough times lately; here's hoping things will start looking up!
