Original Song Title:

"Marian the Librarian"

Original Performer:

Meredith Willson

Parody Song Title:

"Iranian Uranium"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Yes, we got trouble. Right there in Natanz city. With a capital 'T' and that rhymes with 'G' and that stands for Get Robert Lund's Recording.
Ira---nians
They've got ura---nium

What can we do
Tehran
To block
The bomb?
You're boasting madly madly of your Iranian
Uranium
Heaven help us
If your leader's not merely jivin'
And there's U-dash-two-thirty-five in
A facility subterra---nean
Full of ura---nium

Better not push
Away
The U.
S.A.
Or who'll be pushing pushing up the geraniums?
Iranians!
Nukes are nasty
So let's hope Ahmadinejad'll
Keep that genie inside a bottle
Or we'll probably Bush and Che---ney 'im
'Cause of ura---nium

Now all the Shiites
Hate us with de-light
Holy Shiite!

Ayatollahs, we know
You and OPEC
Sing "U.S. is the Great Satan" songs
With the Shiites
Chanting along

Though we may bitch
You can
Enrich
Iran
But no enrich-enrichin' any Iranian
Uranium!
Ahmadinejad - disturbs us more than a-ny-one
He's a devil but not - New Jersey or Tasmanian
But we'll yell 'til we've got - this message through his cranium:
No more ura---nium
If you're Ira---nian!

Teehee, welcome back Spaff! The Capital Steps could use this one. Who was the parody author who did most of The Music Man as a Bush-whacking...this could fit right in. 555
alvin rhodes - May 17, 2006 - Report this comment
my favorite of the day...this is probably my all time favorite show tune, too....mind blowing wordplay
Phil Alexander - May 17, 2006 - Report this comment
DKTOS, but the recording is marvellous - loved the "Ahmadinejad'll/bottle" rhyme... (and the "Till there was U235" footnote)
Cat - May 17, 2006 - Report this comment
What a coincidence...my school just did a production of The Music Man not too long ago. This was most excellent, Spaff! TMGLTM but "Holy Shiite!" was a standout.

even listening to the recording I don't K the OS, but the wordplay was still a blast (so to speak) - Phil pinched the best one, and cat the next, but "Bush and Che---ney 'im" was classic spaff, and nice of you to remember my neighbours, the Tasmanians, spaff - 555

Great recording, Spaff! I had an idea on how to solve this problem (it's not great but I'll let it fly): If Iran wants Uranium for reactors, the US (or some other country) could trade pre-made fuel rods, which are only ~2-5% Uranium (and therefore unsuitable for nukes) for oil, and for Iran's enrichment equipment. However, the idea of the Iranians running (more) nuclear energy plants doesn't sit too well with me - I'd hate to see another Chernobyl. 555.

I thought of Holy Shiite before anyone else did! Fantastic parody though, 555s

"Or who'll be pushing pushing up the geraniums?" Nice touch.

What's all this talk about enriching uranium? What does uranium do when you give it money anyway? Enjoyed this!

Flawless Spaff in action. This one will certainly have a long afterlife. Awesome rhyming throughout, particularly liked "He's a devil but not - New Jersey or Tasmanian". *suh-wish!* Will need to hear this one when I've got my earphones on me.

Aggro: John Barry?

Alvin: I *love* getting the Favorite of Alvin Rhodes Today (F.A.R.T.) award! (Have I used that joke before?)

Phil & s2art: "The Music Man" is one of the most beloved American musicals, but it's *so* American that perhaps it was never successfully exported to your distant lands. Still, the Beatles had to have heard about it somewhere; "Till There Was You" is the only show tune they covered.

Catgirl & Hairy Lensley: "Shiite" may be the worst-ever anglicization of a foreign word, and perhaps the real reason so many Muslims hate the West. Heh heh. Not to downplay Larry's originality, but I'm guessing that the guy who introduced the word into English said, "Shiite. As in Holy Shiite. Get it?"

Ant in Chains: Ahmadinejad won't negotiate. I think the nuke thing is just a means to the end he really wants: a showdown with Israel and the USA. I think he's trying to turn himself into a Middle Eastern legend: the guy who went after the "Zionists." Honestly.

Scat: I originally had the plant as "Argyranthemum foeniculaceum," but I wasn't sure how to rhyme it.

Wrecks: Groan. That was rich.

Ralphing Brat and any others who haven't heard the recording: Do so. It's one of Robert Lund's best ever. The guy has played Harold Hill in multiple productions of "The Music Man," so trust me on this.

I agree with your assessment of "Shiite," which might be in the least potent lines in this parody. Of course, everything else was excellent with humorous and clever rhyming. I also agree with Agrimorfee about this parody being Capitol Steps quality, and several years ago, the Capitol Steps did a parody of the OS about Marion Barry, the drug-using former mayor of Washington, DC.

Thank you Dr. Demento for bringing us this one!

Johnkins: Oh, I remember the Marion Barry story. Classic. Didn't know about the Capitol Steps parody, though. I hereby resolve to get more familiar with the Capitol Steps. (As in the group, not the, you know, stairs.)

Paul: Thank *you*. I forwarded your comment to Dr. D.
