Song Parodies -> "Id to Freud"

Original Song Title:

"Ode to Joy"

Original Performer:

Schiller/Beethoven

Parody Song Title:

"Id to Freud"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

Beethoven adapted part of a work by German Romantic poet Friedrich Schiller ("An Die Freude") for the choral section of the 9th symphony's final movement. "Freude" is German for "joy," so I dropped the final "e" and segued to Sigmund. I've attempted, as much as possible, to rhyme, more or less, on the German rather than on an English translation. The OO (original ode) and two translations can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_to_Joy Not listed at this link is the opening recitative of the chorale: "O Freunde, nicht diese Toene!/Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen/und freudenvollere!" (O friends, no more these sounds!/Let us sing more cheerful songs,/more full of joy!)
Oh Freud, Herr, fix, please, my ego!
Your praises I am singin', and I ain't stintin'.
I'm a Freud-follower.

Freud, Herr Dok, got in the dumps 'n'
Talkin' will allay my funk.
Weird daydreams in foyer, drunk 'n'
Hissin' at folks, like a monk-
ey, then feel bad; I turn weeper.
What's my mood been? Rather vile.
I'm no mensch, actin' like Cheetah;
Chimplike, I'll chatter a while.

My id is grossly unsprung 'n'
You, friend Freud, will hear me whine.
I'm not fixated on dung 'n'
I was toilet trained on time.
I've been cursin' like a sailor. . .
Use words rhymed with "muck" and "runt."
You tell me such words are staler
Than bromides, but they're sure blunt.

Freud, your thinking's always Western
And you probe human nature.
You said "Anatomy's destin-
y." You ask, "Are thoughts impure?
Are you kissin', are you rapin'
In your dreams sis, mom, or pop?"
I feel like a Hairy Ape in
Gene's* id-ridden agitprop.

When I tell you I'm a vegan,
It is just my diet plan,
Not a proxy for a man
When bananas I am seekin'.

Ask me if I thrill to Onan--
I admit I've grabbed and felt
Brazenly below the belt
When I had a fatter bone 'n'
I was once my millions ownin'--
I was swimmin' in the gelt;
You have slimmed my money belt.
I get your bill and I'm moanin'!
*Eugene O'Neill, American playwright. From Encarta: "Many of his dramas were strongly influenced by the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud, and they stripped away people's civilized veneers and probed their inner psyches. In The Hairy Ape (1922), a ship's stoker is transformed into an animalistic rough. "

Thanks, Alvin. I sometimes try to let my imagination run riot.

Having memorized this in German, I can appreciate how closely you stuck to the original scan. I also tackled this, and did perform it at Espresso, along with "Moonshadow" (Beethoven)

LOL ! "words that rhyme with muck and runt" cracked me up, among others. 555

Truly marvellous: I was thinking of doing some Ode To Joy words, too, but hadn't come up with anything worthwhile so far... (Rick - doesn't he mean "tuck" and "punt"?)
