The Lyrics

This is my tribute to Chrissie Hynde, the singer and rhythm guitarist of The Pretenders, one of the greatest female rock musicians and songmakers ever. She has always been one of my heroines along with Sally Oldfield, Suzanne Vega, Joan Jett, Deborah Harry and Susanna Hoffs. Hynde has always taken, like Johnny Cash, the side of the small man and small woman on her lyrics.
Oh yes she' the Great Pretender (ooh ooh)
As rocker one true of her kind (ooh ooh)
Her songs are great and her words have weight -
She's always a heroine of mine

Oh yes she's the Great Pretender (ooh ooh)
Playing her Tele aloud
Unlike many broads who are but just frauds
She really will make rock the crowd

She's real with her lyrics and melodies
She's real with her guitar and chords and her riffs

Ooh ooh yes she's the Great Pretender (ooh ooh)
Shes' the heart of her band and its spine
She's sure to be the rock and roll queen
no pretending, and never decline -
Chrissie, you're heroine of mine!

Yeah ooh hoo
She's real with her lyrics and melodies

Ooh ooh yes she's the Great Pretender (ooh ooh)
Shes' the heart of her band and its spine
She's sure to be the rock and roll queen
no pretending, and never decline -
Chrissie, you're heroine of mine!

Good one. I'm a Chrissie/Pretenders fan, too. "Jealous Dogs" and "Brass in Pocket" are my favorites.

I saw the Pretenders in California during the autumn of 1987, opening up for U2. Chrissie is a real cool lady rocker and she can really kick butt! The BoDeans, the Pretenders, and U2 - great triple billing, one great rockin' evening! I also love Joan Jett, Go-Gos, Bangles, Deborah Harry, and the French all-girl band Plasticines. Keep rockin'!

I would also add Wendy & Lisa and Christine Amphlett of The Divinyls. And Janis Joplin, of course.

I used to play bass in a band while I did my studies. The Pretenders was my favourite back then, and I still love Chrissie Hynde.

Let's also add Sharon Foo of the Ravionettes. Marie Fredrickson of Roxette (now THAT'S a diva!) and Annie Lennox (Eurythmics). There's Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart) and Pat Benatar. Don't forget Aretha.
