The Lyrics

(instrumental opening)

Oh, yes, I'm the Entertainer
and I know just where I stand.
The songs I've played
backed in serenade
by a-nother long-haired band.

Oh, yes, I'm the Entertainer.
I've been all around the world.
I forget names
but it's all the same
at palaces and with girls.

Too real is expense
as I stay in line.
Got bills I must pay.
I can't stay, don't have time!

Yes, I'm the Entertainer.
I've come to do my music show.
The song of my life
cut to three-oh-five
so it fits on the radio
'cause the record execs, they don't know.

You've seen me in pa-
pers and magazines.
Can't go cold, won't get sold
like an old can of beans!

Yes, I'm the Entertainer.
Today, I may have won your hearts.
But I won't be here
in another year
if I don't stay put on the charts.

Until the oldies
circuit starts.
(Circuit starts!)

so am I alone in thinking that this whole "song reversal" thing is kind of clever? 5's and now on to the next part Billy Joel's "The Great Pretender"

Amazing. This is almost like one of those songs that can be sung to another song's melody. The 45 rpm of "The Entertainer" reads 3:05 on the label. The album version is a bit longer and includes a stanza in which the singer "lays all kinds of girls". That is why the radio execs cut it. You can hear the full-length "Entertainer" on youtube.

Okay, I understand why my political and sports parodied get one-bombed, but why this? Was there something inherently wrong with it? If so, what? And if it's just me you don't like, then that's a stupid reason to give a song a bad rating.

There are some stupid people who find their way to this site. I don't follow team sports except during those rare moments when the KC Royals and Chiefs are doing well. So, I don't consider myself qualified to comment. As for politics, we are on opposite sides. When you comment on something I write about Obama, that tells me you've read my parody. If I wanted to waste my time, I could zip through each day's lineup and 111 everybody's entries without even reading them. But, what would that mean? That's why I don't use numbers and I don't look at the numbers for my creations. I only value hearing from someone who took the time to read and to formulate a reaction. Your comments on my Barry Manilow version of "Eve of Destruction" took note of my reference to the President being on the golf course when war erupted. You also noted that I had updated the song from its 1965 origins. I left an explanation of why I did that (this song, when performed today is still being updated to refer to current crises and controversies). If I were to sing (heaven forbid) "Eve of Destruction" today, I would probably change the last stanza to "Think of all the hate there is in Damascus, then take a look around to Ferguson, Missouri". Barry McGuire and other performers do similar rearrangements when they perform. But, in the final analysis, you read what I did, and you took note of it, correctly identifying the fact that I had changed some of the references. That means something. It wasn't just a string of numbers. I don't know how you rated it, if at all. The system doesn't register who left negative (or positive) numbers, only the comments. Maybe if it did... But who needs more complications?
