The Lyrics

Labor Day's here and summer's over - it's Halloween
Stores advertising through October - it's Halloween
When level headed people start to go insane
And holler, "Oh, boy! It's Halloween.".

Plutonian shadows come together as days decline
Revelers are freaks of a feather - out of their minds
Although the prospect sickens here we go again
Oh, brother, once more it's Halloween.

In the cacophony of night
We lay low out of sight, put out the light
With the doors and windows locked up tight
Minutes turn to eons before day dawns.

Imaginary Martians haunt us - invade our world
Folks dressed as Nazis come to taunt us - TP unfurled
Tonight I count the hours 'till the clock strikes twelve
Hoping it's the end of Halloween.

Here in the aftermath of night
We're cleaning pumpkin shards from our front yards
Streamers of toilet paper hanging high
The silly season's here on time each year.

Multiplex horror movies thrill them as days of old
Orson Welles' tales of Martians chill them - nightmares unfold
Those grinning Jack 'o Lanterns lighting up the road
Aren't Martians - it's only Halloween
Oh, brother, once more it's Halloween.

The Halloween specialty stores were open in KC and the orange and black boxes of candy hit the shelves in mid August. What was once an evening of candy gluttony is now the longest holiday of the year, stretching to more than two months. Oddly, at least in my neighborhood, the old-fashioned "trick or treating" is a thing of the past. Haven't seen one at my door in 20 years.

Thanks, Patrick -I thought it started after the Fourth of July. Do you know that all the upscale stores have Halloween themed fine linens, china and other dishes? That shows Halloween is more popular than Christmas.

Where do you live that you see Nazis on Halloween? I've lived in PA and CA (mostly the latter) and have never seen Nazis or Klan. What store would sell that? It's not like you can go to the Party Store or Walmart or Target! I used to trick or treat in astronaut gear! Btw, 555!

Once I saw a boy about 9 years old dressed as Adolf Hitler in a very authentic looking brown shirt uniform. His friend wore a German spiked helmet.

What kind of parents would allow that? Imperial German is OK with the old lobster tail, but Third Reich? No way! Same for Klan or even jihadists. I grew up in the '70s so us boys were still into monsters, animals, dinosaurs, paranormal, robots, heroes, and TV themes.

I was fortunate enough to go out as a Transformer! My brother went out as Travolta one year, ya know Saturday Night Fever blastin' the Bee Gees! He almost got his butt kicked!

Thanks, Ben - my favorite costume was a clown suit red with white polka dots.
