Technically, Christmas originally celebrated the coming of the wise men and those gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Some place the rising of the mysterious star on December 25th.) That was almost two years away from the business with the manger, though, so the song is true enough.

It was originally a pagan holiday, something like "Day of the Sun," but when Christians settled there, they changed the meaning of it and called it "Day of the Son".
