The Lyrics

In a May 27 speech, US President Obama claimed to have been in charge from "the day this disaster began" and had approved every step that the "responsible party" (BP) took. He then rescinded his earlier relaxation of offshore drilling restrictions and put any new permits on hold for 6 months. This sacred hymn fits his claims of ultimate power and is timely for Memorial Day. I highly recommend TOS for its choral and orchestral background music as well as history and alternative stanzas.
Barack Obama, hope and change,
Whose charmed speech sounds in crestless range,
Who bid the mighty ocean deep
His own appointed limits keep: [1]
Oh, hear us when we cry this plea
For those in peril from the sea!

Obama's voice protesters heard [2]
And hushed their raging at his word.
While talking of oil drilling deep,
He dreamed of new green age in sleep.
So fearfully we try to flee
Imposing peril from the sea!

Barack Obama, who did brood [3]
Upon the spray of darkened crude,
Would bid its angry plume decrease,
And give thick mud infusion lease. [4]
He'll hear us when we cry, "May we
Foreclose this peril from the sea?" [5]

Divinity of government!
Our coastline shield in this event
From flocculating mire and floe;
Protect us where no dare e'en go. [6]
Else ev'ry shore we've prized will see
Sad skims of glaze on land from sea.

[1] In a 2008 speech, he promised to stop sea-level rise from global warming.
[2] I.e., objectors to expanded exploration.
[3] "From day 1" (or was it May 1?)
[4] Coast Guard approved top-kill procedure, which failed.
[5] Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal awaits EPA permit to build barrier berms.
[6] Includes tourists as well as residents, businesses and wildlife.

The tune was written by John Bacchus Dykes. Unfortunately, not even Dykes (dikes?) can now hold back the oil. As for being an Obama idolator by using this tune, don't worry...the media does it all the time...and unlike you, NOT for satirical purposes! Great job, BJM! ;D

Good twist to the hymn. But don't blame him. The president isn't omnipotent.

A tune I recognize. That's getting to be less common on this site. BP has to work frantically to stop the leak while the government stands around talking about criminal prosecution. Obama takes responsibility for something that is not his fault.

OMR: Quite a coincidence (Dykes/dikes). The lyricist (William Whiting) never imagined his words turned into "black humor" 150 years later.
2E & P: I don't blame him, except for claiming to be in charge while insisting that BP is responsible for all costs. Today t my alma mater (CMU), he called for "rolling back tax breaks" for oil companies to fund non-fossil energy sources. Can he do anything right? "Never let a crisis go to waste." -- Rahm Emanuel

I missed this one the first time around for some reason, sad to say. One should never let a good parody go to waste. This is, of course, up to your usual standard, Barry, and skewers B. Hussein Obama deftly, as he so richly deserves.
