Song Parodies -> "Where The Fly Sucks"

Original Song Title:

"Ariel's Song (Where the bee sucks)"

Original Performer:

Will Shakespeare

Parody Song Title:

"Where The Fly Sucks"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

Short, but not so sweet...
Where the fly sucks, there suck I
With a cowpat's smell I'm high
There I flit as dogs walk by
And birds drop blessings from the sky
After dinner messily.
Messily, messily shall I create
Faecal footprints over your plate

I've been wondering... OK, so you didn't like the parody but this is the original, as quoted from the Tempest (I think WS has been dead for long enough so that copyright has expired by now):

Where the bee sucks. there suck I:
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat's back I do fly
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

Now - if that isn't syllable for syllable there ain't a parody here that is: so WTF voted 1s for pacing?

You deserve a lot of credit for thinking to parody Shakespeare! I gave you 4-4-4. The score might have been higher, but the parody is so short and there seems to be a pacing issue with the last line - WS had 10 syllables and you have 8.
Phil Alexander - February 24, 2003 - Report this comment
Re the last line: in the tune to which this is normally played, "Blossom" is sung as two half-notes, and the "that" is swallowed altogether, so my last line fits the tune if anything better than the original ;-) Obviously, I can't blame Shakespeare for that, as the tune that is generally used was written hundreds of years later...

PS I have here somewhere a "parody" of sorts to the "Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look" speech from JC, applied to Blair/Mandelson. But I don't think it's entirely appropriate for amiright.

Thank you for enlightening me - I did not expect a rebuttal, but your explanation makes sense. If you have updated JC to Tony Blair and Peter Mandelson, please share. It might not be top ten material, but you might be surprised.
