The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound.
Well, duh!! Isn't heat, by definition, *supposed* to be hot? Thank you captain obvious!!

In the desert you can remember your name
Even if you have to spend a lot of time in a large urban area and you hate that, I'm sure you can still remember your own name.

In the desert, you can't remember your name
Cause there ain't no one for to give ya no pain.
Triple negative plus conjoined prepositions. That is really crappy English just to complete the rhyme and meter. And why is it (we're told) that one cannot remember one's name because there's no one else around to cause one pain?

I fell asleep on a rainbow.
No one can sleep on a rainbow. A rainbow is just an illusion, therefore, nobody can even touch one. Therefore, this lyric describes something that is literally impossible.

And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad
What the hell? I mean, seriously. Any attempt at analysis just detracts from the perfect nonsense that simply...is.

Oh, Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have.
Think a triple negative (which implies a negative) is bad? Try this quadruple negative, the summit of horrible grammar. But at least the meaning is decipherable.

Alligator lizards in the air
Dewey Bunnell said he got the vibe for this song while standing on the side of Ventura Blvd. While some other guy he was with was changing a flat tire or something. The whole California scene flashed before him and what came out? 'Alligator lizards in the air?' Still, alligators and lizards are two different kinds of reptiles; a hybrid of them just seems nonsensical.
