Neil Sedaka's, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do"
The Lyrics:
They say that breaking up is hard to do.
Now I know, I know that it's true.
Don't say that this is the end.
Instead of breaking up I wish that we were making up again.
Why:
I can't remember a more lilting tune from the 1960s than this one. But the words are a desperate plea to a girlfriend not to dump him. The last line cited above is nearly an admission of the virtual inevitability of the break-up and the desperation of the singer's wishes that things were otherwise. By the way, the singer did an original "fast" version of this and then sometime later a slow "ballad" version (same lyrics both times). What I say here came mainly from thinking about the original "fast' version. But even the slow "ballad" version is not nearly so much of a downer tune-wise as the lyrics could merit.
