"Take It Like a Man"
Misheard Lyrics: I'm gonna get that hairy woman!
Get that hairy woman! Get that hairy woman! Make it stand; I'm gonna take it like a man! Original Lyrics: I'm gonna get back where they want me!
Get back where they want me! Get back where they want me! Make a stand... I'm gonna take it like a man! |
Story about this misheard lyric by: James I purchased my first cassette, Def Leopard's Pyromania, in the mid 80s. But when I played it, it turned out to be the Best of Bachman Turner Overdrive! I used to belt out, all through my early teens, "Get that hairy woman!" revealing my true fetish (as the age of waxing and landing strips were not yet upon us). When I told my mom I wanted to move from the Northeast to Portland after college, she exclaimed, "No, it's all because of that song you used to sing." But how did my mom know that the Northwest was full of hairy hippies? |

The Repetitive Lyrics: Takin' care of business ...
Why They're Repetitive: Let's see, they say it four times in each chorus, then repeat it ad infinitum at the end (which once prompted me to ask a friend, 'Hey, what was the name of that bto song they just played?'). No wonder I once heard them called Bathroom Toilet Overflush.

"Takin' Care Of Business"
The Insulting Lyrics: And if your train's on time
You can get to work by 9 And start your slaving job and get your pay. If you ever get annoyed Look at me, I'm self-employed I love to work at nothing all day Why They're Insulting: Doesn't this passage sound a bit on the smug side?

"Taking Care Of Business"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: I'm taking care of my business! (the part spoken during the interlude)
Why They're Inappropriate: When I was a kid "business" was a "polite" word in my family to refer to your ding dong. Therefore, in this portion of the song "taking care of one's business", could be a hidden reference to polishing your sex pistol or to something else?

"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"
The Dirty Lyrics: She took me to her doctor
And he gave me the cure He said "Any loving is good loving". So I took what I could get, yes I took what I could get And then she looked at me with those big brown eyes, and she said - "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"... Why They're Dirty: This looks like one of the first rock songs to mention someone getting the CLAP. After treatment he comes back to the girl for more!

"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"
The Lyrics: You ain't seen nothing yet.
Why: I know that they at least USED TO teach in school that "ain't" is not a grammatically correct word. Its use has increased nonetheless. But even if it has been gramatically sanctioned by now, "ain't seen nothing" is still a double negative. making it incorrect English. Another issue to consider is whether the word "ain't' in its increasing acceptedness should be allowed to cover the territory of "haven't" as well as that of "isn't", "aren't" or "am not". The usual colloquial function of "ain't" is as a negative form of the verb "to be". But in a few phrases, like in this song's title line, it becomes a negative form of the verb "to have", since the standard way of stating the line is "You haven't seen anything yet", not "You aren't seen anything yet". So it is fair to question, however acceptable "ain't" becomes in lieu of "am not", "aren't" or "isn't", should it be further stretched to sometimes mean "haven't" or "hasn't"?
