- They got their name from the movie Barbarella. The villian's name in the movie was Duran Duran and they liked the trippy music associated with the movie. So they named themselves Duran Duran as a tribute to Barbarella. Jane Fonda was hot too. Submitted by: Bam Bam
- Yes, the name comes from Barbarella, but it's a closer link than that. In Birmingham, England, where the band come from one of the early clubs where everyone went was called Barbarella's and Duran Duran's members three founding members played gigs there in 1978. Why: "Rio" was a #14 hit in the U.S. for the British New Wave group that was probably the most identified with the 1980's, Duran Duran (their second top 40 hit after the #3 hit, "Hungry Like The Wolf"). It was also the title song for their first long playing lp, "Rio" (released in late 1982; there was an earlier EP -- non full length lp in 1981 that featured the tune, "Girls On Film"). "Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf" 1983 videos really were the epitome of the early MTV and music video revolution, with looks being very important, and sometimes seeming to be more important than the music (although Duran Duran can NOT be accused of NOT making great music). The song "Rio" lyrics featured the real Rio Grande river (also known as the Rio Bravo del Norte in Mexico), that is the natural separation between the state of Texas and the country of Mexico (in places). But Duran Duran would not film the music video along the Rio Grande, instead filming it on Antigua Island.

What A Band is Best Known For (aside from their music):

It's common for a band's singer to write the lyrics - it's that way for Bono of U2, for instance and for DD's Simon Le Bon it's the same way. Songs like ''Hold Back the Rain', Union Of the Snake', 'The Reflex', 'Save a Prayer', 'Notorious', 'Is There Something I Should Know?', 'The Chauffer' ('sing blue silver' -WHAT?!!), 'Serious', 'View to a Kill', 'Cracks In the Pavement' ('my head is so full of chopstick / I don't like it' ROTF, LMFAO) and more. These are very catchy songs - a delight even now but the lyrical content is so STRANGE to say the least. Even the other Durans have said that they no idea what goes on in Simon's head when he writes the lyrics! Oh well. Simon Le Bon is no Simple Simon. He's a terrific poetic writer. Still, he uses such funny flowery metaphors and overall in several Duran Duran songs the lyrics MAKE NO SENSE. Anyway, I love Duran Duran and I'll take their strange lyrics ANYDAY over the crap that passes for lyrics today ('My Humps', yeeeccchhh).
