Dusty Springfield (and covered by Janis Joplin, LiI once read a claim that there's a place called Springfield in all 50 US states. I first read that when the only three Springfields I knew of were in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Missouri, limiting my puzzlement to those three, as to which was the dusty one. I'm glad I didn't read that above claim in time to be further puzzled over which, among all 50 of those supposed Springfields was being called Dusty. I more recently read that the claim is a misconception, and that really there are only 34 or places in the US named Springfield. I wish I'd read that before I spent so much time searching a map for Springfield, Hawaii. Just today, I wondered if Springfield, Oklahoma might be the dusty one, as I had long heard of the Oklahoma dust bowl. I tried today to look up that one, finding that the Springfield in Oklahoma is currently a neighborhood in Oklahoma City. I've not found out so far whether it was ever a separate town. I know that over the years, Oklahoma City HAS expanded its city limits a lot. Submitted by: Richard Wetfuss

"Son of a Preacher Man"
Misheard Lyrics: The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a creature man Original Lyrics: The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man |
Story about this misheard lyric by: Ralph Brew I was very little. I had heard the word creature. Had no idea what a preacher was. Even going to a church wedding at age 5 or 6, I saw the priest and excitedly said out loud that he was a magician. But I did not think about it further until I was in my thirties, I was singing along once and realised the word that came so easily to my mind must be wrong. So I asked around. And got laughed at. |

"Wishin' And Hopin'"
The Funny Lyrics: Wear your hair just for him.
Why They're Funny: So if it weren't for "him", would hair be a nuisance one would be better off without? Maybe that explains why, decades later, Britney Spears once cut off all her hair. Maybe at the time she had no "him" to wear it just for!

"Wishin' and Hopin'"
The Dirty Lyrics: All you gotta do is hold him and kiss him and squeeze him and love him Yeah, just do it And after you do, you will be his
Why They're Dirty: The song generally sounds like any pre-feminism early 60's song. "Just do it" is downplayed on the record, as if it's got a meaning. It does, and everyone know what it is.
