- I have no idea where Brian got his bit about 'the clap', i've NEVER heard that one. Eoj is more on point as those are all answers that The Flaming Lips themselves have given (including a supposed dream about kissing the virgin mary in the backseat of a car and getting the sensation that his lips were burning). But the truth is to my knowledge The Flaming Lips have never given a straight answer about the origins of the name because there really isn't any straight answer. Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:
"Evil Will Prevail"
The Lyrics: The whole song has depressing lyrics, but the first few lines are: "With loving hands/And their arms are stretched so wide/They can't seem to take a breath/Knowing evil will prevail." And the very last line is "Evil will always win."
Why: You have to listen to hear the lovely, joyful innocence of the melody and vocals. It's a fabulously ironic song. And it's just a plain great song, too.

The melody and chord progression during the verses as well as the chorus of Fight Test (2003) by the Flaming Lips are nearly identical to that of Father and Son (1970) by Cat Stevens. Fight Test has a faster tempo, but the melody is right there. After a non-contentious suit between record companies, both the Flaming Lips and Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) are receiving royalties.
