Peggy Lee or Madonna, Elvis, etc.I know what you must be saying to yourselves. If that's the way she feels about it, why doesn't she just end it all? Oh, no, not me. I'm not ready for that final disappointment. 'Cause I know, just as well as I'm standing here talking to you, That when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my last breath, I'll be saying to myself… Is that all there is? (Is That All There Is? - written by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller - from 'Is That All There Is?' - 1969) Submitted by: LucidLupin

"The Star Carol" | Begins "Long years ago on a deep winter's night," An alternate "title" might come from those opening words, but I've never heard it called anything other than "The Star Carol". The lyrics do refer to a star, namely the star of Bethlehem, but the word "carol" is never found therein. - Ava Murphy |

Story about this misheard lyric by: Alana Because this song has is sung with a strange voice and bizarre accent, and is made strange for a Dysney cartoon, I misheard nearly the entire song as a child and was never corrected all my life. I sang it all messed up into adulthood and one time I was overheard and the person was like " What? That's not right." Told me what it actually said. I was not even close! |

"Happiness Is Just A Guy Named Joe"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: But when he kisses me, it's Christmas everywhere
Why They're Nonsensical: Peggy was certainly expressive in the lyrics to this song, intended to show the woman character's love for 'Joe.' But the phrase 'It's Christmas everywhere' makes no sense. How could it be Christmas somewhere at one time and somewhere else at another time?? It must have been chosen just for prosodic reasons...

"I'm A Woman"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: I can scoop up a great big dipper full of lard from the drippings can,
Throw it in the skillet, go out and do my shopping, Be back before it melts in the pan. Why They're Inappropriate: It's definitely not a good idea to go shopping while a "great big dipper full of lard" is heating up in a skillet!

"My Man"
The Lyrics: He isn't true,
He beats me, too. What can I do? Oh, my man, I love him so. Why: I was reminded of this when I read another entry on Amiright - one under "Banned Songs", about a Garth Brooks video being banned for depicting domestic violence, But seems there wasn't a problem with singing about domestic violence when this came out. But back then, refer to a couple in bed, or say "hell" or "damn", and censorship was inevitable. Go figure, Every generation has it things that it strains at, its things it sees other generations as prudish for, and its things that it glosses over as "no big deal".

"Fever"
The Lyrics: Thou givest fever When we kisseth
Why: The Old English declensions would be just like modern English for 'we'. 'Thou givest' is fine, but it should be 'When we kiss'.
