'fading out your hologram' - that implies a future development. Well, we now have hologram entertainment, people paying to see holograms of Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur and other dead celebrities. Also, since this song is from 1979, this also indicates that maybe Bryan Ferry & Co. saw the phenomenal movie STAR WARS which came out in 1977 and in the cinemas until 1979. Of course, that flick features hologram messages from Princess Leah smuggled and stored on the R2D2 droid. A little bit of entertainment history for ya!

Why They're Dated:

Roxy Music and other acts ignited the punk rock/new wave/alternative/indy revolution during their "glam" days and after. When this song came out it was 1979, the revolution had practically set in since there were now a whole "wave" of bands just starting out or soon to come that were inspired by Roxy in some ways like Duran Duran, ABC, Spandau Ballet, Adam and the Ants, the Cure, and more. Even some 'power pop' bands like Cheap Trick were influenced, and even the 'glam metal' bands like Def Leppard were influenced by Roxy. IOW, the revolution Roxy Music helped inspired was already HERE and would greatly influence rock in the Eighties.

Like nearly all Roxy Music albums, the covers feature women. The 1974 album 'Country Life' has two scantily clad German women, one in a bikini and the other topless (hands covering her breasts), This led to the album distributed in the US with the women taken off, but later releases featured the women but the album was sold in a paper bag. No matter, it sold well in the US anyway.

In order to make it rhyme with "fancy," Bryan Ferry pronounces "dilettante" as "dill-uh-TANT-ee," when it is actually "DILL-uh-tont!" (As this song taught me the word "dilettante" in the first place, needless to say, it puzzled me quite a bit!)

"Guitar Pose Inspirations"

We all know about how Roxy Music is an inspiration for punk, new wave, alternative and indy rock in so many ways . The center gatefold spread of their 1972 self-titled debut shows all the band members holding various guitars. Front man Bryan Ferry looks like a glam rock 23rd century Elvis and the other band members were also glammed up and dressed in various exotic costumes. There have been similar album art tributes by bands inspired by Roxy. For instance, for the 1980 Cars album 'Panorama' there's a similar inner spread picture of the Cars holding various guitars. In the 2004 Duran Duran album 'Astronaut' the Fab Five members also pose for a 2-page spread in the CD booklet. They are all holding various model guitars too. The Cars and Duran Duran and many other bands are inspired by Roxy Music and this is one clear way they've shown it!
