Jokes:

*******ACTUAL HAPPENING****** I was driving home in my car and I had the radio on. It was playing "Give A Little Bit". After the song was finished the DJ announced that the previous song was by Supertramp, and he joked that "Supertramp" was the name the band took for themselves "after they met your sister!". Man, did I laugh my butt off.

Band Name Origins:

  • The band got it's name from the first drummer by the name of Richard Palmer. Palmer wrote all the bands lyrics at the time and was a literature graduate or student at least. The name comes from a book by W.H. Davies. The book being titled "The Autobiography of a Supertramp". There was an online version of it if anyone cares to give it a read. Submitted by: Tony Trampfan
  • Unemployed guitarist Roger Hodgson was busking in the underground (subway)in London in the late sixties when a man approached him. An unkempt Hodgson asked if if he liked the music, to which the man replied, "Super, Tramp!" (Tramp is the British word for a "bum" or "hobo") Submitted by: Richard Braithwaite

Funniest Song Lyrics:

"Gone Hollywood"
The Funny Lyrics:
I'm tired of talking on the telephone
Why They're Funny:
Why would people be tired from calling friends on the phone? Furthermore, at the time this song was made, it was the typical way to communicate with people!
Submitted by: Mike Hack

Repetitive Song Lyrics:

"Oh Darling"
The Repetitive Lyrics:
I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna catch you, lady
Why They're Repetitive:
It sounds extremely repetitive. It's always repetition.
Submitted by: Mike Hack

Nonsensical Song Lyrics:

"The Logical Song"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Yeah...one, two, three, five!
Why They're Nonsensical:
(Near the end of the song.) I thought Roger Hodgson knew how to count. Why did he skip four? This isn't such a logical song if he counts illogically!
Submitted by: Liza Lott
"The Logical Song"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep for such a simple man...
Why They're Nonsensical:
Unless the Earth's atmosphere suddenly turns into sleeping gas, ALL the world falling asleep - at one, the same time - is NOT realistically possible.
Submitted by: Panini
There are additional Supertramp nonsensical lyrics available.

Misrhymed Song Lyrics:

"Breakfast in America"
The Misrhymed Lyrics:
I'm a loser, oh what a joker...
Why They're Misrhymed:
Everything else in the song rhymes just fine, but that one line just doesn't! It kind of bugs me.
Submitted by: Cassie N.
"From Now On"
The Misrhymed Lyrics:
I think I'll rob a store, escape the law, and live in Italy
Why They're Misrhymed:
'Store' and 'law' actually rhyme beatifully when sung with e British accent.
Submitted by: Sam Stafford

Insulting Song Lyrics:

"Dreamer"
The Insulting Lyrics:
You stupid little dreamer
Why They're Insulting:
Self-explanatory. Need I say more?
Submitted by: Alex

Inappropriate Song Lyrics:

"Goodbye Stranger"
The Inappropriate Lyrics:
The devil is my savior.
Why They're Inappropriate:
The devil tries to make people miserable. I know who my savior is and it's definitely not satan.
Submitted by: I.P. Frehley
"The Logical Song"
The Inappropriate Lyrics:
Whoa, tick, tick, tick, yeah!
Why They're Inappropriate:
This is mentioned right before the instrumental break (with the sax solo), and by the way, these are the actual words, as confirmed on most lyrics sites. Why Roger Hodgson decided to put this in here, I don't know, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the song.

Dated Song Lyrics:

"The Logical Song"
The Dated Lyrics:
Now watch what you say
Or they´ll be calling you a radical
A liberal, afanatical criminal ,
Oh won´t you sign up with me
We´d like to feel you´re
Acceptable, respectable,
oh presentable, a vegetable!
Why They're Dated:
The term "liberal" didn't have such negative connotations in 1979, at least not in America. "Liberal" became a slag word during the 1988 Presidential elections between VP George H.W. Bush and Massachusettes Gov. Mike Dukakis. Since then the so-called GOP has used that word as a slur but then again most Republicans today do not fall under the category of "conservative" anymore either. Yet here in this 1979 hit "liberal" is used pejoratively in a time when the textbooks were still using that word in a positive manner!

"Oh Darling"
Opening Lines:
Oh darling, will you ever change your mind?
