Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

This is to anyone who ever tried to study quantum physics or superstring theory...
Flat
Like an angle in a triangle
A plane upon a plane
Euclidian geometry's
Not too hard to explain
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a path upon a sphere
Once you hit that third dimension
It all becomes less clear
Like a tiny 1-D superstring
That's infinitely small
It exists in ten dimensions,
Or is it really there at all?
These are problems that you face
When pondering n-dimensional space

Like a tesseract unfolding
As from nowhere it has grown
We see it coming from a fourth
Dimension of its own
Like a door that keeps revolving
Pushed by Schroedinger's dead cat
Just which three of the ten
Dimensions are we looking at?
Like a theory mutated
On a plane that's rearranged
And topology that's twisted
'Till reality has changed
Can mathematics keep apace
With changing N-dimensional space?

Sets that hold dimensions
Whose dimensions set the sets
If you understand recursion
That's as complex as it gets
Things that by their interactions
And their intersects defined
Does the logical conclusion cause
Implosion of the mind?
Pictures like they were by Dali
Looking really, very odd
In the depths of quantum physics
Do we see the face of God?
When you knew exams were over
Were you suddenly aware
That what you wrote was rubbish
But now you really couldn't care...

Like a one-dimensional ribbon
Like a thread around a thread
Superstring theory turns
The world upon its head
And it shows a certain grace
Electro-microscopic lace
In N-Dimensional space

Highly Intellectual.

Phil, you should turn this one in for the final exam. I'm sure you'll get an A.

Thanks... but my days of exam-taking are long gone now (thankfully). I had hoped to get more explanation into this one, but I couldn't get the comprehensible bits to scan (not that there are many comprehensible bits in superstring theory)

Awe-inspiring. You couldn't have picked a better tune. "Windmills of your mind" has about the same effect on my brain as does non-euclidian space and reinmann manifolds.

(ABC) Awesome.... worthy of 5's simply for the one line "Like a tesseract unfolding".

(ABC) Good one. 5's
Jeff Reuben - August 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Very good...and educational

I assume you are familiar with the story by Robert A Heinlein; "And He Built a Crooked House" About a home built like a tesseract. No?

(ABC) I dropped Maths in Year 10. Due to the warped nature of Sillystring time management, this parody was the catalyst. Truly well written. I will now mutate an ambitious giraffe into maramalade, resulting in three 5s on your Voting Breakdown.

Jeff - I'm not sure exactly how educational it really is: there's not a huge amount of depth (compared to some others of mine, which can be used as revision aids ;-) )
Rick - Yes: I think that may possibly have been my first introduction to the concept of a tesseract
Luke - I'm sure mutating a giraffe into marmalade is conceptually much more demanding, no matter how ambitious the giraffe
The Invincible - August 04, 2004 - Report this comment
This parody is very funny because anyone who reads it will instantly feel stupid. This is my favorite kind of humor. All fives.

N - very nice!

(ABC) What? Triangles, planes, spheres. No cones? ;-)
Phil Alexander - August 08, 2004 - Report this comment
No, Merry: there's no N-Dimensional roadworks, so no cones needed :-)

Very good,You should have started from a 'point'(.)

Ah... you have a point.

I am a software engineer currently given work of working in n-dimensional space. I found this through search in google. looks like very true and says just what i would have said had i the feeling enough to write poems....... gupta21@lycos.com Pune, India

I tried to follow it, Phil, but when I stopped to try and digest some of it that snowball rolling down the mountain ran over me and I was flattened into a "Paulsicle". Guess that's what happens when you "Dali" too long in some place where you have absolutely no idea what is going on...But you got a very nice note validating your explanation from Mr. Gupta, and hey, it sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Seriously, that was really quite a complement that he gave you and very thoughtful of him to phrase it the way he did.

Phil, I wasn't going to vote on it until I re-read the remark "The Invincible" made and realized that DID make it plenty funny to me. So once I got defrosted and warmed up my fingers I clicked three "5's". I was able to figure out how to do that without too much trouble.

Ajay - for a parody of this nature, that's high praise indeed :-) I'm in the middle of "The Universe in a Nutshell" by Stephen Hawking at the moment, and it's making me realize that what I wrote here was a) inspired beyond what I thought I knew at the time, but mainly b) what I think I understand still confuses the hell out of me. Basically, I get some of the theory, but the more I try and think about it, the more my head hurts: -)
Paul (and The Invincible) - it wasn't written to try and make people feel stupid (and I did rather like Mr Gupta's compliment :-))... but you should see my research page for this one: what I left out was way more confusing.. at least, it was for me.
