The Lyrics

This is an ekphrastic parody. (Ekphrasis the use of one form of art to describe the essence and form of another.) The painting in question is “The Glass of Absinthe,” by Edgar Degas (1834-1917).
She’s a mien half alive, having an iced glass of vice.
See that girl, dig that scene—Degas’ the Absinthe Queen.

In this boite[1] where the lights are low,
Opalescence is tinged with eau.
There they play some night music—not Salzburg king’s.[2]
Out of the frame a chanteuse sings.
She sits next to a sodden guy;
He is drunk; his fashion ain’t high.
Had a bit of rock sucre[3] ’neath the water line—
She is in no mood to dance
And she has a glazed glance.

She is the Absinthe Queen,
Slung in seat, focused on a dream.
Absinthe queen comes to meet here the Fairy Green,[4] ah oui!
She’s not mean, half alive, having an iced glass of vice.
See that girl, dig that scene—Degas’ the Absinthe Queen.

She appears to have just now yawned;
Her appearance is thujone-spawned.[5]
Will she have another, or maybe two?
She’s in no mood for romance,
Looks like she’s in a trance.

She is the Absinthe Queen,
Drunk in seat, focused on a dream.
Absinthe queen comes to greet here the Fairy Green, ah oui!
In a dream, half alive, having an iced glass of vice.
See that girl, digs the green—Degas’ the Absinthe Queen.

[3]sugar—the ritual consists of dripping iced water over a sugar cube suspended over the glass of absinthe on a slotted spoon until the sugar melts
[4]“The Green Fairy,” moniker for absinthe
[5] A ketone and a monoterpene that occurs naturally in two diastereomeric forms: (')-α-thujone and (+)-β-thujone. It has a menthol odor. Thought by some to be responsible for the alleged psychotropic effects of the beverage.

I thought absinthe was banned in the USA. Then I saw some in a store over the weekend. Not for me. I've seen pictures of the Degas painting. One era's images of lowlifes becomes the next era's high art.

Patrick, it was banned till 2005. I like the stuff, occasionally.
