The Lyrics

The Spanish Inquisition

Flies (also, Fly) = trouser opening

In fifteen forty two
Praying, you will do
Oh
If you don’t abide
Or if you deride
Torture is applied

Then, on the stake, you’ll find
Church men are unkind
Oh
With your parts on fire
An’ tears in your eyes
Smoke comes from your flies

If you shaft your neighbour’s wife, you’re daft
I think they would roast your knob
Hell to pay: your knob, they’d burn away
You’d be without your knob
(Without your knob)

Then, crying, you’d be tied
To the stake, an’ fried
Oh
It’s a vile display
When you’ve got the flame thighs
Smoke comes from your flies

Smoke comes from your flies

Glad you enjoyed it, OMR, but I much prefer Des O'Connor...Rolf Harris...Tom Jones, you know... :)

Shared OMR's unexpectedness - any reason that 1542 was specifically chosen? SI ran from 1478 to 1834, officially ....

Looking forward to follow-up re: Church requiring Galileo to retract his claim that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa, under threat of torture and excommunication. (And the famous, if apocryphal, story of what he muttered under his breath.)

555, and isn't it funny how the folks running this thing claimed to represent One whose philosophy was "Love thy neighbor", tolerance, etc.? Never have been able quite to reconcile that.... ;)

Thanks TT - 1542 sounded the best when I sang along to it.

I'm also looking forward to when you follow-up with Galileo. :)

Religions only seem to tolerate those who are *exactly* like themselves.

Naah, you're on a roll with Church-bashing -- you do Galileo. (E-mail me if you care to know why I'd rather not.)

"Religions only seem to tolerate those who are *exactly* like themselves." ... So, uh, how exactly are we ever to have "Peace On Earth", which all of them proclaim to be their goal? [1]

[1] I know, I know ... we should all convert to theirs. But first, they have to fight amongst themselves over which one we have to convert to -- "Last Church Standing" wins.... Looks like a lot more war coming, and one whopper could make the whole question moot. ;-(

TT - the next peace on Earth will be after we're all extinct.
