"The Young Pretender", more popularly known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie", was a claimant to the throne of England, Scotland & Ireland in the mid 18th century.
Alba = Scotland
King George II of Great Britain & Ireland (reigned 1727 - 1760)
Gramp = his grandfather was King James II of England & Ireland, and VII of Scotland (reigned 1685 - 1688)

Prince Charles was born and raised in Rome, Italy, where his father lived in exile after two failed rebellions of his own. He arrived in Scotland in July 1745 and gathered an army of 6,000. They marched south and took Carlisle, just over the border in England. They continued south to Derbyshire but, finding no support, his council made the decision to return to Scotland. The Duke of Cumberland, son of King George II, pursued them to the Scottish Highlands. He defeated them at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. Prince Charles was helped to escape by loyal supporters, who disguised him as a maid and got him aboard a ship to France. He spent the remainder of his life in exile in France and Italy.

How is it you KTOS, but DK "Leave It To Beaver", which was cotemporaneous? ... Guess music can make it across the Pond, but not telly. (UK-ism! ;)

Always great to combine history or other pedantry with an entertaining parody. Lots of good lines, but "Carlisle we defile;" was the hands-down winner. 555, and thanks for pointing me here!

Charlie may have been the legal heir to the throne, but he was a Prat. He ran off to save his own skin and left the Scots high and dry while England 'made a desert and called it peace'. The '45 destroyed the Clans and sent many a Scotsman into permanent exile... :(

Thanks for the v & c Meriadoc.

He did do a runner once back in Scotland but he had been up for the fight against the English when they had marched down to Derbyshire. It was his council that had decided to return to Scotland because of a presumed massive government army amassing against them. There was no massive government army coming against them but their retreat gave enough time for one to be assembled, which led to the defeat at Culloden. It may have been a different outcome if the Scots hadn’t returned to Scotland when they did.
