Alannis Morrisette, Alanis Morrissette, Alanis Morrisette, Alanis MorisetteI've learned that it's really important to maintain a good self-image, to love yourself. You should surround yourself with people that are patient, with people that have reverence for the process. The people around you need to not focus on the outcome of the process or focus on what I see as an illusory destination. Life is a process, beyond even when we die. So too is art. It's a process of mulling it over, checking it out, falling on your face, whatever that means. It's about seeing that process from beginning to end, finishing it, writing it, painting it, singing it. Whatever you do, don't judge the shit. -Alanis Morissette (Source: Women Who Rock Magazine) Submitted by: Isac
| In my opinion, I think sarcasm and humour in a song, without turning it into a novelty song, is really charming. When I was producing on my own, I was doing it in order to - in a very patriarchal entertainment industry, let alone planet - very much hell-bent on trying to prove to myself, if nothing else, that I could do it as a woman. The person who knows HOW will always have a job. The person who knows WHY will always be his boss. We'll love you just the way you are if you're perfect. Well, I didn't smile for a long time. - Alanis Morissette |

"All I Really Want"
The Funny Lyrics: Do I stress you out?
My sweater is on backwards and inside out And you say 'How appropriate.' Why They're Funny: One of the funnier lyrics of a song where Alanis tells some guy to go away because he's a jerk, pretty much. It's just quoting an insult to Alanis's intelligence.

The Funny Lyrics: How about them transparent dangling carrots
Why They're Funny: What the hell is that supposed to mean??? I found this posted in the Nonsensical section, which I'm not surprised about...but it's also funny because it baffles most listeners, including myself.

The Nonsensical Lyrics: Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down, he thought 'Well isn't this nice...' And isn't it ironic ... don't you think Why They're Nonsensical: Actually most of the song is nonsensical as Alanis has no concept of what irony is. The examples in the song (particularly the 2nd verse, which is listed above) are about misfortune, not irony. What would be ironic is if Mr. Play It Safe, who's afraid of flying took a bus, car or train and crashed doing that instead.

The Insincere Lyrics: Its like a traffic jam when you're already late
A no smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife It's like meeting the man of your dreams and then meeting his beautiful wife Isn't it ironic? Why They're Insincere: Umm.... no it's not ironic at all. These are examples of very bad luck, (or even coincidence) but do not constitute irony. For example, 'a traffic jam when you're already late' would only be ironic if you were the town planner, and because of your mismanagement of the roads, you were stuck in said traffic jam, which then made you late for work, as a town planner!

The Misrhymed Lyrics: It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams and then meeting his beautiful husband Why They're Misrhymed: The lyrics on the original version ('...all you need is a knife ....meeting his beautiful wife') _did_ rhyme. However, Alanis saw fit to change it on her accostic album just to make a politcal statment (never mind that gay marriage is already legal in her native Canada).

The Misrhymed Lyrics: An older version of me
Is she perverted like me? Would she go down on you in a theatre? Does she speak eloquently? And would she have your baby? I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother Why They're Misrhymed: Do I really need to explain why 'theatre' and 'mother' don't rhyme?...

The Inappropriate Lyrics: It's like rain on your wedding day
Why They're Inappropriate: Due to the rules of the site, I couldn't post the entire song. But Alanis Morissette wouldn't know irony if it slapped her in the face. So, for example, the above line would only be ironic if the person singing were a meteorologist. Go through the lyrics and I dare you to find a single bit of irony in it anywhere!

The Dirty Lyrics: You're the best listener that I've ever had

The Dirty Lyrics: Ooh this could be messy
But you don't seem to mind Ooh don't go telling everybody And overlook this supposed crime Why They're Dirty: Lolita. This is about statutory rape, the whole song is about her relationship with a much older producer when she was a teen. It may be the same fellow that "Ought to Know"

He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight As the plane crashed down, "Well, isn't this nice?" And isn't it ironic, don't you think? Why: According to plane rides, even though Mr. Play-It-Safe suffered from aviaphobia, acrophobia, macrophobia and claustrophobia, doesn't mean he was leaving from town to town.

The Lyrics: Traffic jam, when you're already late.
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break. It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. It's like meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife. And isn't it ironic, don't you think? A little too ironic, yeah I really do think. Why: This song is mostly an unlucky song. Bugs in your wine, your planes crashes, and you thought you found a true love but the lover is married! Yeah real bad luck.
