The Eagles | Twenty-One | Twenty-one and strong as I can be. I know what freedom means to me. | "Twenty-One" is another song from the Eagles' 1973 sophomore lp, "Desperado". - Peter
The Eagles | I Wish You Peace | I wish you peace when the cold wind blows, Warmed by the fire's glow. | "I Wish You Peace" is yet another song from the Eagles' "One Of These Nights" lp. After the success of "One Of These Nights" some creative differences would shake up the band's membership (although main principles and vocalist, Don Henley and Glen Frey would stay with the band), most noticably Joe Walsh going solo (and succesfully at that). The revamped group would come back in the fall 1976 with the multi-million dollar seller lp, "Hotel California" which would produced the #1 singles, "Hotel California" and "New Kid In Town" as well as the #3 hit, "Life In The Fast Lane" and the top twenty hit, "Victim Of Love". This same group would also release another multi-million dollar hit lp, "The Long Run" which would not only produce the top five title tune, but also the #1 hit, "Heartache Tonight", and the top ten hits, "I Can't Tell You Why", "In The City" and "Those Shoes". The Eagles also firmly established themselves as a Classic Rock and Classic Hits artist for all time. But shortly after the success of "The Long Run", in 1980, the Eagles announced to the world their breakup and both Don Henley and Glen Frey would have successful solo careers well into the 1990's (Henley would also gain notarity for his liberal and environmental views and working for and giving financially to liberal and environmental political causes and candidates). The Eagles' would reform (the late 1970's version, minus Joe Walsh) in the mid-1990's for another lp, and several brief tours. - Peter
The Eagles | Most Of Us Are Sad | Most of us are sad. | "Most Of Us Are Sad" is from the Eagles self-titled debut lp, "The Eagles", from 1972. California based, the Eagles from the start seemed to have instant success. And in many ways as the Beatles dominated the 1960's, the Eagles seemed to have dominated the 1970's -- at least in terms of chart success (with both singles and lp's and even in terms of setting the mood of that decade -- although the Eagles wouldn't have their first #1 tune until 1975). "The Eagles' lp also contains the top ten hits, "Take It Easy", "Witchy Woman" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling". - Peter
The Eagles | Midnight Flyer | Oo, Midnight Flyer Engineer, won't you let your whistle moan? | "Midnight Flyer" is another song from the Eagles' 1974 third lp, "On The Border". - Peter
The Eagles | Doolin-Dalton | They were duelin', Doolin-Dalton. | "Doolin-Dalton" is from the Eagles' 1973 sophomore lp, "Desperado". "Desperado" the lp certainly showed the Eagles were not suffering from a sophomore slump, a matter of fact the Eagles continued to show more depth and maturity and sold even better the sophomore lp than the 1972 self-titled debut lp. - Peter
The Eagles | One Of These Nights | One of these nights, One of these crazy old nights We're gonna find out Pretty mama What turns on your lights. | "One Of These Nights" is the title track to the Eagles' 1975 4th lp. The lp, "One Of These Nights" followed quickly on the heals of the Eagles' third lp, fall 1974's "On The Border". "One Of These Nights" lp was released in the summer of 1975. The single, "One Of These Nights" was also the second #1 hit for the Eagles following the first #1 single, "Best Of My Love". "One Of These Nights" is more uptempo than "Best Of My Love" (a fairly good dance tune), and showed that the Eagles could rock out as well (something many critics and audience were starting to doubt they could at this point in their career). With the single of "One Of These Nights", the Eagles were no longer considered just an easy listening group. The lp, "One Of These Nights" would also produce the top five hit, "Lyin' Eyes" and yet a third #1 hit, "Take It To The Limit" (fall 1975 at #1). - Peter
The Eagles | Desperado | Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? | "Desperado" is the title track from the Eagles' 1973 sophomore lp. "Desperado" is more likely than not to be the Eagles' song that has been most covered by other artists. A matter of fact, Linda Ronstadt would have a bigger hit with "Desperado" a little later on in the 1970's than the Eagles would. - Peter
The Eagles | Visions | Visions, that you stir in my soul. | "Visions" is another track from the Eagles' 1975 4th lp, "One Of These Nights". - Peter
The Eagles | You Never Cry Like A Lover | You never cry like a lover should. | "You Never Cry Like A Lover" is from the Eagles' 1974 (released fall 1974) lp, "On The Border". With "On The Border", the Eagles started to reach legendary status with the lp producing the top five hit, "Already Gone" and their first #1 song "Best Of My Love" (spring 1975). In many ways, "On The Border" also fit the times, very well, with the fact many young people were starting to leave behind the protests of the late 1960's/early 1970's due to the Vietnam War and Civil Rights and the mood of the American public in general post President Richard M. Nixon's resignation in August 1974. - Peter
The Eagles | James Dean | James Dean, James Dean I know just what you mean. | "James Dean" is another track from the Eagles' 1974 third lp, "On The Border". "James Dean" refers to the young actor who died way too young back in 1955 after a car accident. - Peter
The Eagles | Tequila Sunrise | It's another tequila sunrise Starin' slowly 'cross the sky, said goodbye. | "Tequila Sunrise" is more than likely the most played on Classic Rock and Classic Hit stations of today of the Eagles' early works (well, maybe "Witchy Woman", "Take It Easy" and Peaceful Easy Feeling" come close). "Tequila Sunrise" is also another track from the Eagles' 1973 sophomore lp, "Desperado". - Peter

Edwin Starr | War | War ... huh ... yeah What is it good for? | "War" from Edwin Starr was one of the few Motown protest songs about the Vietnam War. "War" was a #1 song for Starr (his only) back in the summer of 1970 for three weeks. It is also a great dance song to boot. "War" has been covered by none other than Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen. Starr was born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee on January 21, 1942 and would be produced at Motown by Norman Whitfield. After having a top ten hit with "25 Miles" in 1968, Starr would go onto greater fame with "War". Starr later moved to Europe and continued to have success in Europe. Starr died on April 2, 2003 at his home in Beeston, England of a heart attack. - Peter

But the song itself was only added after Ethel Merman took over the title rool, in 1967, from the original Dolly Levi, Carol Channing (it was added for Merman's wider vocal range) when Channing went out to Hollywood. Barbra Streisand would not sing the song either in the 1969 motion picture (when she played Dolly Levi) because the song was not put into the motion picture version. - Peter

"Gypsy" first premiered on Broadway on May 21, 1959 with Ethel Merman playing Mama Rose and is loosely based on the relationship between the pushy Mama Rose and her daughter, Louise, who would later go on to become the stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee (who wrote the original story the musical is based on). Other actresses who have played Mama Rose were: Rosalind Russell in the 1962 motion picture, Angela Lansbury in a mid-1970's Broadway revival, Tyne Daly, briefly, and then Linda Lavin in a late 1980's/early 1990's Broadway revival and finally Bette Midler on a CBS-TV special movie in 1993. - Peter

Ethel Merman played the original Annie Oakley and Ray Middleton played Frank Butler who was briefly married to Annie Oakley. - Peter

Ezio Pinza | Some Enchanted Evening | Some enchanted evening You may see a stranger, you may see a stranger Across a crowded room And somehow you know, You know even then That somewhere | The rest of the opening line is: "... you'll see her Again and again." "Some Enchanted Evening" was from the 1949 Broadway musical (also was in the movie of the same title a few years later) of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II's "South Pacific". It was the first time that Broadway music met up with opera (Pinza was a famous opera singer of the time) since "Porgy & Bess" in the 1930's. Of course later on, with Andrew Lloyd Weber, the blending of the two musical styles would become more common place. - Peter |
