"Christmas Wishes" | "If I Had My Way This Christmas" is the opening line, and hence a potential alternate "title". The lyrics do mention Christmas, as in the opening line, and also wishes. She enumerates three wishes in the lyrics, saying "My first wish" and "My third wish" at points, but never the phrase "Christmas Wishes". - Ava Murphy |
"Danny's Song" | Written by Kenny Loggins, Anne's version was a bigger hit. Sadly, Danny only appears in the title. The most well known section is probably: "And even though we ain't got money I'm so in love with ya honey Everything bring a chain of lo-o-o-o-ve" - Bob Borst |

"I'll Be Home For Christmas"
The Funny Lyrics: I'm dreaming tonight of a place I love
Even more than I usually do. Why They're Funny: It is hard to find an artist or group that has done a Christmas album but not recorded this overdone song. But not all who record it include introductory lines that include those cited above. So I cite Anne Murray as the artist because she is one that I'm immediately aware of who definitely DOES include those introductory lines. "Funny" can have various meanings, including a meaning of having something amiss, without exactly being dead-on humorous. So that makes "funny lyrics" the best page that amiright currently has for ambiguous lyrics. These lyrics are entirely ambiguous because -- What is the singer doing more than usual? Dreaming of the place in question, or loving the place in question? No answer can be determined from these lyrics alone. They are utterly ambiguous in that regard.

The Funny Lyrics: I never knew how it felt to lose my control.
Why They're Funny: Gee, this cracks me up every time I hear it. It never fails to make me think of the kind of 'lose my control' that she might mean if she got a wicked case of diarrhea. I can't help laughing; I just find diarrhea so hilarious! Folks have thought me cruel for laughing at diarrhea when others got it. But maybe they would understand differently if they knew that I laugh at my own diarrhea as well! Anyhow, I thought I'd post this funny lyrics story while I'm indoors and at the computer because some boob told me that it was raining outside. Thank you!

"You Needed Me"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: You held my hand when it was cold.
Why They're Nonsensical: This statement is ambiguous, and therefore without clear meaning. That is because pronouns normally take antecedents, but the pronoun "it" does not necessarily take any antecedent when referring to weather. One can say, for example, "it is cold", it is windy", "it is sunny", "it is snowing", etc., and "it", without any antecedent, is understood to refer to weather, generally. But occasionally ambiguity is possible when there is a reference that is a possible antecedent for "it". In the line above, "my hand" is a possible antecedent, so the ambiguity is as to whether "it was cold" refers to the singer's hand or to the weather. And nothing about the sentence structure itself can resolve that ambiguity.

"You Needed Me"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity Somehow you needed me Why They're Inappropriate: 'You needed me'? More like I needed you. And 'sold my soul' where? This just seems like a cheesy song about a unhealthy relationship. I have awful flashbacks when I see that Anne Murray's Greatest Hits commerical on tv.

"A Love Song"
The Lyrics: There's a wren in a willow wood.
Flies so high and sings so good. Why: In this generally delightful warm fuzzy song with its subtly soft eroticisms compatible with the nice-Nellyism of singer Anne Murray, the word "good" is misued as an adverb, apparently in order to make a rhyme. "Good" is, properly used, an adjective. The correct adverb would be "well". It would seem hard to correct the grammar and still make a rhyme. I don't know how common willow woods, as opposed to other types of habitats, are in Anne's native Nova Scotia. I have greater experience in the southeren Appalachian mountains, where various shrubs of the heath family, including rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel, blueberries, and dog-hobble, form dense thickets, very hard to penetrate. Although the heath family is not at all closely related to the mainly old world laurel family, most if not all of those members of the former have been collectively dubbed "laurels" because of a superficial resemblance. Early settlers, wanting to travel through the Appalachian area, dubbed those dense thickets "laurel hells" because of the formidable barrier that they presented to passage through, and the name somewhat sticks to this day. That gave me an idea how both rhyme and grammar might be preserved, had the song's setting been the southern Appalachians, at least. It could have been "There's a wren in a laurel hell. / Flies so high and sings so well." But that has qualities that could detract from the song's romance. Incidentally, I'm not sure of the aptness in any event of referring to a wren as flying so high. Perhaps wrens are entirely capable of flying high. But all kinds of wrens that I have any knowledge of have habits that keep them fairly close to the ground much of the time. They like to frequent undergrowth and tangles of fallen wood.

"A Little Good News"
The Lyrics: Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today.
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play. And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA. We sure could use a little good news today. Why: Refers to the island of Ireland, which is divided up between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom. The wish stated herein no doubt alludes to the fighting that has plagued Northern Ireland, so that's where the reference applies within the island of Ireland. Then refers to the United States of America. Also there's a reference to "the Third World", a place of sorts, even if a vaguely defined one. Originally it seems the term referred to countries aligned with neither "the West" nor the "communist block". But it has morphed into a more socioeconomic term than a political one, denoting parts of the world whose economic conditions and quality of life are way below the standards that more prosperous countries enjoy.
