Band Name Origins:

  • Hey, Bruce Dickensen is from Manor Park, East London, and a avid West Ham fan. They chose the name because West Ham Utd are known as the IRONS (also the hammers) and IRON MAIDEN sounded like a good metal name, incorporating "the Irons". Submitted by: Geforce
  • Although there was a torturing device kown as the iron maiden, the band's name was more directly taken from the 1939 movie "The Man In The Iron Mask." (Source: alt.rock-n-roll.metal.ironmaiden FAQ) Submitted by: Bill M.

Funniest Song Lyrics:

"22 Acacia Avenue"
The Funny Lyrics:
Stop all this screwing!
Why They're Funny:
Basically this whole song is directed at Charlotte the Harlot, a prostitute and trying to get her to 'mend her ways', so to speak. It's just a very funny line.
Submitted by: Metalgirl162002

Repetitive Song Lyrics:

"Run to the Hills"
The Repetitive Lyrics:
Run to the Hills, Run for your lives
Why They're Repetitive:
For the first, last, and ONLY time, this is not a damn Megadeth song!!!!!
Submitted by: ironman
"Out Of The Silent Planet"
The Repetitive Lyrics:
Out of the silent planet
Why They're Repetitive:
Fair enough it's a good song, but it has surely the king of all repetitive lyrics. In the space of 6 and a half minutes, Bruce manages to sing 'Out of the silent planet' at least 34 times...

"Can I Play With Madness"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
You're blind, too blind to see
Why They're Nonsensical:

Submitted by: scrumpton
"Wasted Years"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Ain't it funny how it is,
you never miss it 'til it's one away
Why They're Nonsensical:
It's not funny at all - of course you don't miss things before they go away. Do you miss things you still have??

Real Places Mentioned in Songs:

"22 Acacia Avenue"
The Lyrics:
If you're feeling down, depressed and lonely, I know a place that we can go, 22 Acacia Avenue, Meet a lady that I know.
Why:
Acacia Avenue/Road/Street etc. is a term used to describe a typical London suburb (e.g. Bananaman lived at 29 Acacia Road.) The person in the song was a friend of Bruce Dickinson, Maiden's lead singer, and a, er, prostitute.

Songs That Are Banned:

"Sanctuary (single)"
The original cover art showed the band's mascot, Eddie, attacking Margaret Thatcher. The artwork was quickly edited to have Thatcher's eyes censored by a black bar, by request of record label, EMI.

Hidden Messages:

"The Number of the Beast"
Another Derek Riggs addition on the cover. Look very closely at the people dancing in the flames--Not all are dancing. There are quite a few there in various sexual positions.
Submitted by: Heather Loeffler
"Powerslave"
The old Derek Riggs Maiden covers always have something hidden. The Powerslave cover has Mickey Mouse in the hieroglyphs. You have to look very closely and carefully for it. It is located in the bottom right corner just above the sphinx on the left and beneath the first jackal. Either check it out on the original vinyl or on the cd cover (you'll need good eyes or a magnifying glass). You might see it on a very good scan on the web.

What A Band is Best Known For (aside from their music):

"Being a punchline in a movie."
In "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure", the titular pair are in medieval England when they're captured by the King's men. The king orders that they be put in the iron maiden. Thinking he means the band, Bill and Ted yell "Excellent!"
