Garth Brooks or Billy JoelToo many times we stand aside And let the waters slip away 'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow Has now become today So don't you sit upon the shoreline And say you're satisfied Choose to chance the rapids And dare to dance the tide... - Garth Brooks, The River Submitted by: LucidLupin

"The Beaches Of Cheyenne"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: To this day they claim,
that if you go down by the water you'll see her footprints in the sand. Every night she walks the beaches of Cheyenne. Why They're Nonsensical: I guess the writers of this song were trying to be metaphorical, but I don't really think you can call it a metaphor. It's a tragic song about about a man who gets killed competing in a bull riding contest at a rodeo in Cheyenne Wyoming. Meanwhile, his lover, the woman mentioned in the song is living somewhere on the coast of California. She was angry with him when he called her and told her he was competing one last time in a rodeo and she said some very hurtful things to him. When she's told he's been killed she's heartbroken with grief and guilt and goes and drowns herself in the ocean. People say they've seen her ghost and her footprints on the shore so therefore she's walking the "beaches of Cheyenne". But the problem with that is Cheyenne Wyoming is very far inland and hundreds of miles at least from the nearest coastline or beach. It's a good song that evokes sadness and tragedy, it's just too bad they phrased some of the lyrics in a way that when you stop and think about them don't really make sense.

The Nonsensical Lyrics: Every night she walks the beaches of Cheyenne
Why They're Nonsensical: This song is about a lady in California who wanders off into the ocean and drowns after she hears that her husband has been killed in a rodeo accident in Cheyenne, Wyoming. But the song, particularly this line, doesn't make any sense. Either she's walking the beaches of California, or she's doing something physically impossible, because last time I looked at a map, Cheyenne was the capital of Wyoming, which is a landlocked state. I love you, Garth, but I just don't understand this song.

"The Dance"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: I could have missed the pain but I'd a have to miss the dance.
Why They're Inappropriate: Don't get me wrong. I loved this song until...I heard it played at a funeral of a guy who killed himself. hello!! The song is about not giving up. Since then, I really can't listen to it.

| "Beaches of Cheyenne"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: Every night she walks the beaches of Cheyenne
Why They're Inappropriate: Cheyenne Wyoming? Are there beaches in Cheyenne? I don't think so; Wyoming is a landlocked state! Maybe it's some other Cheyenne...but where??

"Unanswered Prayers"
The Dated Lyrics: I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord For the gifts in my life Why They're Dated: That's not Trisha Yearwood he's referring to (whom he hadn't met at the time), but his first wife and mother of his three children.

"That Summer"
The Dirty Lyrics: That summer wind was all around me
Nothing between us but the night When I told her that I'd never She softly whispered that's alright And then I watched her hands of leather Turn to velvet in a touch There's never been another summer When I have ever learned so much. Why They're Dirty: An older woman took his virginity...yet you might not catch that unless listening closely.

| "Ain't Going Down til the sun somes up"
The Dirty Lyrics: Correct lyrics are: Four o'clock get up and going
Five o'clock that rooster's crowing Why They're Dirty: I have wondered if they are, just for the 'ain't going down' aspect - but I think it's just an expression for staying up all night. However, I had to point out that the interpretation by a previous poster actually contains the wrong lyrics!

| "It Don't Matter To The Sun"
Opening Lines: It don't matter to the sun if you go or if you stay.
Comments: Performed by Garth Brooks as the fictional musician Chris Gaines from Garth's 1999 In The Life Of Chris Gaines album (a.k.a. Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits). According to the liner notes, this song came from Chris' 1991 Fornucopia album, and is supposedly a remake of a 1972 Ramsey Sellers song of the same name, sung in honor of his father who passed away a year earlier.

"The Beaches Of Cheyenne"
The Lyrics: She ran out into the ocean and to this day they claim. That if you go down by the water, you'll see her footprints in the sand. Every night she walks the beaches of Cheyenne.
Why: The song's referring to Cheyenne Wyoming. But Cheyenne Wyoming isn't on the coast of the U.S. and is nowhere near a beach.
